Consider a job offer

Plan to take time to consider each and every job offer. And always ask for time to think about any offer. Decide what you need, what you want, and where you can compromise. And think about what you will be giving up (the job you have now, the option to go back to school, free time) if you take the offer. If you aren't satisfied, discuss your concerns with the person who made the offer and see if they can get closer to what you are looking for.

Here is a list of factors to consider before accepting any position:

  • Work environment
  • Responsibilities
  • Wage or salary
  • Insurance benefits (medical, dental, life, and disability)
  • Sick and vacation leave
  • Medical and other pre-tax accounts
  • Retirment plan options
  • Profit sharing
  • Stock options
  • Parking or transportation
  • Child care needs
  • Flexibility

Decide if you will take the position as soon as possible and relay the information back to the person making the offer. If you decide to accept, ask for the offer in writing to protect yourself. If you turn it down, do it kindly - you never know when you will cross paths with that employer again.

More information about considering job offers and negotiating salaries can be found in the Career Resource Library.
